Chapter Twelve

Emma

He’s called me princess more than once, doesn’t deny it when people call me his girl, and now he’s holding my hand like I am his girl. And I’m completely okay with it. I probably should stop it all, tell him I need more time to think, but do I? It isn’t like Lev is a complete stranger, and even in high school he’d been respectful even if he was a little trouble. Of course, he could have changed a lot in three years, but it doesn’t seem like he has. At least, not where his manners and morals are concerned.

I’ve never been anyone’s princess before. Well, my father called me that when I was little, but this is different. He holds my hand like it’s meant to be in his, and let’s not ignore that kiss. Sugar cookies, he only kissed my hand but it made me melt.

“That must be it,” he says, nodding to the right before turning into the lot. His thumb brushes over mine, sending my heart thudding against my ribcage.

It’s a quaint little brick house with faded blue shutters and a big welcome sign on the front. Lev squeezes my hand and lets go so he can get out of the truck. I’ve gotten accustomed to him opening my door, so I stay put until he comes around the back and opens it. He holds his hand up to stop me from sliding out like I normally do.

“It’s pretty muddy. You want to jump out and I’ll catch you?” he offers.

The whole truck is one mud slick and I am wearing my favorite sweater, so I reach for him. I am absolutely certain his intention is to grab me around my waist and help me avoid sliding on the truck, but my foot slips on the semi-damp carpeting and I tumble forward. That’s how I end up draped over his arms, staring up at him. He purses his lips to keep from laughing but it doesn’t stop my cheeks from warming.

“That was almost a disaster,” he says, lowering his right arm so I can stand.

I let my feet fall to the ground and stand straight, brushing hair out of my face. His eyes connect with mine again and the tension thickens. I’m still supported by his other arm, staring back at him, my mind screaming kiss me! He doesn’t. Instead, he swallows, steps back, and shuts the truck door.

“I think our bags will be okay out here while we check in,” he says. It doesn’t make sense. Of course everything would be okay in the truck since he can lock it, but judging by the way he keeps adjusting his hat, I think he’s as thrown off and nervous as I am. He offers his hand and leads me toward the front door that’s decked out with a massive wreath. It’s quite a thing to maneuver around even when the door is pushed all the way open.

Inside, the inn is cozy with a fire going.
